My day when I sang for the president

So Habida is not and has never been star struck. I have always said that all people are equal no matter what your situation.  The thing that may make you look like you are smaller or bigger or better is how you carry yourself and how you make others feel. Usually the person that has to make another person feel small to feel bigger is usually a person who has issues and so on and so forth.

So on the 1st of June, which is Madaraka day. Habida was invited to perform at state house for the President of Kenya and his distinguished guests. You would not not believe my excitement. I was chuffed, extremely overwhelmed, I would have really done this for free! but hindsight is twenty, twenty! One of the officials who called me had said it was my duty in serving my country, but I didn’t really realize it until I was there standing inform of the president singing my song.  I loved it!

I was on time for the rehearsals and so was the band amazingly as that is usually not the case in Nairobi, you always have to wait for either the drummer, guitarist, back up singer etc. I suppose they felt the honour in doing this as well. We also were in time for the gig, at the gate smack on 12pm.

Now here comes the experience. Lets start with the security, they put us in lines and then called out names according to groups and we went in band by band, or artist by artist.

We got to the next section, which was where the artists or performers were to be fed and boy oh boy we were treated worse than anything I have ever seen. There was a serving area with less than mediocre food apparently catered by Serena. (Now if I was Serena I would be embarrassed to put my name on food like that….Kenyans aren’t we interested in quality and maintaining a good name? anyway) We were served food standing in an open field kind of thing, no chairs, no tables, no nothing and to top it all off there were hawks swooping and grabbing food off your plate. Needless to say I didn’t eat!

We did our sound check and then sat in the artist area, which was nice seating and then performance after performance happened. I went on early as I had a flight thank goodness as the entertainment left much to be desired and the sound was dreadful.

My turn came and I stood there with my cold and all sore throat and all, ready to sing for the president and can you believe I was nursing the worst cold ever. I couldn’t believe it and all the dust swarming around didn’t help at all. I could see Our President seated there looking on and I could see the silhouettes of the other officials and a pride came over me, I WAS SINGING FOR THE PRESIDENT AND MAJOR OFFICIALS WOW! Like I said I never thought I would find this amazing but I did. I LOVED THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE.

Now about the song I sang, its name is “I’m a Dreamer” I wrote this song because of some of the things that go on in this world. The tragedies were my inspiration to write this song. I wrote this that I might inspire Kenyans to be all they can be.

Kenyans lets dream!

Thank you Lord for the opportunity.
